Intersection of art, mental health and human connection

Growing up, my childhood was filled with rich and unforgettable experiences, but one emotional memory that lingers is the constant reminder from my dad: “Don’t look at the mountain on your way to school.” This phrase echoed in our home and even followed us to school, where we were often advised to avoid our eyes from looking at the magnificent sight of Mount Kenya those days. On clear, sunny days, the snow-clad peaks of the mountain shimmered brightly, almost blinding in their brilliance.

At school, in the preparatory stages of our education, we engaged in delightful drawing activities. With crayons in hand, we brought to life the towering mountains, lush trees, and even moulded clay from the banks of a nearby river into various shapes. Each session was a celebration of creativity, and our mornings and afternoons were filled with vibrant colours and imaginative landscapes. Art became more than just a pastime; it became the very language through which we expressed ourselves and narrated our life stories.

The beauty of our preparatory school days was, that we were encouraged to create without the pressure of artistic skill or perfection, focusing instead on the feelings and thoughts that arose during the creative and play process. This non-verbal form of expression was particularly beneficial for those who struggled to articulate their feelings with traditional verbal communication. I remember how violent some children were to the clay while moulding and others were very gentle. Looking back, I now understand better why the room was full of children who were as connected as the threads of a woven tapestry, as the roots of a tree. We were present, free, we felt, we laughed, we cried and there was no shame but pure love.

My journey with art has always been deeply intertwined with my life experiences. From an early age, I immersed myself in creative endeavours, exploring various mediums such as intricate carvings, vibrant clay sculptures, expressive drawings, and heartfelt songs. I also found joy in designing clothes and crafting shapes using wire, each piece reflecting my imagination and emotions.

However, a critical moment occurred during my internship at a particular organization. We had poured our creativity and effort into a project, only for the CEO to erupt with frustration. “You are not creatives; just focus on following what I say!” he barked, each word striking me like a bolt of lightning. The piercing nature of his criticism left me feeling deflated. That night, I returned home weighed down by despair and resolved to conceal all my artwork. The stifling atmosphere of that experience made me wary, and from that day forward, I chose to keep my artistic expressions hidden away, away from the eyes of others.

As I ventured later into life, I discovered the therapeutic power of art therapy. This specialised branch of psychotherapy utilizes the creative process of making art as a healing tool. Encompassing a wide array of artistic expressions—ranging from drawing and painting to sculpting and writing—art therapy provides a unique outlet for individuals to communicate complex emotions and experiences. It transforms feelings into visual or tangible forms, allowing for reflection, understanding, and healing through creativity.

It was in a lecture hall that this was made clear when we were learning about art therapy. I had a light bulb moment when I connected our childhood authenticity to hours, days, and months we spent just swimming in art and the disconnect created by the internship experience. During that lecture I encountered art therapy as an instrument for healing emotional wounds, aiding in personal growth, and fostering self-discovery. By engaging in art-making, individuals had a life encounter experience confronting and processing unresolved issues, exploring their identities, and developing coping mechanisms for stress and anxiety while guided by a professional educator and lead psychologist.

The artwork created during therapy provided valuable insights into our mental state, enabling the therapist to better understand our inner world. This artistic journey did not only cultivate resilience and emotional well-being but also built a bridge between the subconscious and conscious mind, leading to profound personal insights and transformations. Ultimately, art therapy sessions created a safe, supportive environment where individuals explored their emotions, enhanced their self-awareness, and embarked on their path toward healing and growth.

Fast forward, recently while going through my university storage boxes at home I discovered a trophy that I was awarded during graduation for creativity award that struck my reality. I had never shared my art out there since that discouraging experience with the CEO. That is when it dawned on me that I had created a prison that I needed to leave and forge forward. This was drastic because I had resumed my art classes in hiding and anything created during those sessions could not be shown to anyone.  My classes provided an expressive outlet, allowing us to communicate our thoughts and feelings through art without relying on verbal language. By engaging in creative activities, I managed to explore and confront challenging emotions, navigate through past experiences, and learn valuable coping mechanisms that empower.

One of the most notable aspects of art is the safe and nurturing environment it offers. If we can create supportive spaces to express our true selves without the fear of being judged or criticized, that has a way of reaching the most stubborn inner turmoil that holds us back. This freedom from inner pain, shame, guilt, and rejection fosters a sense of self-reflection and encourages individuals to embark on a journey of self-discovery, ultimately leading to personal growth. That’s why even for children and youth, as they engage in artistic activities, they can learn to manage their emotions more effectively and enhance their overall emotional well-being.

Art presents profound benefits for mental health by creating a vibrant space for people to explore their inner worlds. Through these expressive activities, as humanity we can externalize complex emotions, transforming our feelings into visual forms, which fosters deeper emotional clarity and understanding. As a result, we get to experience relief from stress and anxiety, as engaging in soothing creative activities provides a welcome escape from the pressures of daily life.

The art-making process can help us develop essential coping skills and problem-solving abilities, encouraging innovative thinking and resilience. That is why, children and youth must be exposed to art as an avenue for human development. This will enhance their self-esteem and confidence, as they create meaningful artwork that beautifully reflects their unique perspectives and life experiences. Every human being is a masterpiece by the Creator.

Art is not merely a form of creative expression; it is a powerful tool for healing and personal development. By tapping into the inherent therapeutic qualities of art engraved deep within us by our Creator, we can effectively navigate our mental health challenges, build resilience, and cultivate a deeper sense of overall well-being that helps us grow in leadership.

For some time, I’ve been considering jewellery making, and this January, I finally started with the help of a very gifted instructor. Everything has a day 1 and January 2025 presented the day I left that place of hiding creativity. I used to keep my artwork at home, hidden away, creating pieces mainly for my family. I use my artwork to commemorate significant milestones and life events or store gifts like scarves and leatherwork. Adornment is not just about appearance; it’s about beauty that reminds us of our capabilities, resilience, and strength.

It’s an incredible experience to witness art come to life, as I craft unique pieces that flow together beautifully. Each creation is a conversation with my hands, asking how to add that perfect finishing touch. The presence of these pieces uplifts the spirit and fosters empathy.

I dedicate this journey to God for our amazing continent AFRICA. Here are the creations we made today. Jewellery truly makes a meaningful impact. Interestingly, no two pieces are ever identical. This is because each handmade jewel reflects the essence of nature, serving as a tribute to the beauty of creation by the Maker. We are all uniquely wired and that is the same approach I take as a coach and Mental Healthcare professional. You’re a masterpiece!!!
